Google Operating System: Get Yahoo Mail Beta

Get Yahoo Mail Beta

To get Yahoo Mail Beta, just switch your content preference to Germany, France or UK. Then you will be asked if you want to join the beta when you log into your Yahoo Mail. Say yes, and join the beta. Then from the options menu, change your content preference what it was before. Then go to Yahoo Mail again. You should see Yahoo Beta. If you don’t see it, go to options and click “Try Beta” button. That’s all.

How to change your content preference:

* log in to Yahoo Mail

* click Options

* select Account information from the left panel

* go to Member Information, General Preferences, Preferred Content

* select, for example, Yahoo UK

* click Finished

* go to Yahoo Mail

* you’ll see a page that says “It’s the New Yahoo! Mail Beta… and you’re invited.”

* click on “Try Beta Now”.

This works like a champ…just got in myself so I could look around a bit. smile

Random Site Information

Here are the monthly hits for 2006:

  • Jan 2006       9,369
  • Feb 2006       9,358
  • Mar 2006     13,280
  • Apr 2006       1,388

As you may be able to gather from those numbers, I am still getting a absurd number of spam referral spam, though I have managed to get down the bandwidth that these pathetic excuses for human beings are stealing from me. When my problems with referral spam first began I was getting about 30,000 – 40,000 hits a month, and using about 6GB of bandwidth. Since I’ve taken measures to make my site a little less tasty for these bastards I am down around 9,000 – 10,000 (which is still inflated) and only about 1.5GB monthly.

Pretty nice reduction huh?

How did I do it?

I originally had a page that displayed the last 100 referring sites. Useless I know, but kinda interesting when it works correctly. Well, as you’d assume this site gets analyzed by Google and added into their massive index. Referral spam loves pages because they can send thousands of spam refferals to a site that displays a page like this and through this process elevate there page ranking because Google will find more links to the spam site. Well, the simple fix is to get rid of this page and any page that displays any type of referral information. I still have a statistics page that may be causing me some problems, but we shall see if that is worthwile to remove.

Hey, I said this was random site information.  rasberry

TapeFailure – AJAX Web Recording

TapeFailure

TAPEFAILURE is a “history recording tool.” What this means is that anyone can record a browsing session using TAPEFAILURE’s recorder, then save it, and share it with others. Each recorded session can be played back virtually perfectly through our playback tool; as long as you know the tape ID or have a link, you can view your recorded session over and over again.

Could be useful, though it’s fairly new and still quite buggy.

Yahoo Geocoding + Google News + Google Maps = Latest News from your Zip Code

Yahoo Geocoding + Google News + Google Maps

A mashup is a website or web application that seamlessly combines content from more than one source into an integrated experience.

Source – Wikipedia

Pretty much the definition of a Web 2.0 mashup. Kinda cool, kinda useless.  rasberry

Make Web-Applications look and feel like Desktop-Applications with 3D3R Bubbles

Make Web-Applications look and feel like Desktop-Applications

Today’s web is flourishing with cool Web applications. So cool indeed that we use them all the time

Self contained websites with solutions for day-to-day tasks deserve to be as easily accesible.

1. Run & load websites into Bubbles

2. Minimize them to system tray

3. Pop them up just like a desktop app!

A great little application that I can’t imagine not using. Try it out if you use any type of Web 2.0 applications (Gmail, 30Boxes, Backpackit, etc…)

Replace Pop-Ups with dynamic includes using DOMinclude

Replace Pop-Ups with dynamic includes using DOMinclude

Pop-up windows are a pain for both the developer and the users. Often enough a page needs to link to a terms and conditions document and as the client does not want the user to leave the page you are asked to implement them in a pop-up.

The problem with this are technical and psychological:

* years of unsolicited pop-up windows have conditioned users to immediately close windows when they open

* the same reason and security concerns made people install pop-up blocker software and browsers to include pop-up blocking options, and depending on their configuration these may even block your “friendly pop-ups”.

One solution is to use JavaScript to create a new layer with the content of the document when JavaScript is available and simply link to the page when it isn’t.

A very interesting implimentation to get away from using pop-up windows. I don’t think I particularly like the accessibility aspect of this, but it may be a matter of which sucks less. I don’t know for sure, but I would venture to guess a screen reader would have serious issues with this method.

Google Calendar is Live: Some Thoughts

image

Google Calendar is nothing that hasn’t already existed for months. They haven’t added anything new to the online calendar market. Companies such as 30boxes, HipCal, Kiko, and Spongecell have been offering all of the features that Gcal has for several months now, and in many cases even significant features that Google Calendar is missing. It’s important to point out that the “Heavy Gmail integration” is not in fact even working yet, they haven’t bothered to flick that switch apparently.

Overall I am quite disappointed in the lack of any type of innovation on Google’s part. They didn’t even bother to borrow some of the best features of existing web calendars, they are just another one of the masses of options out there that is not very different than the competition.

The only reason people are excited about this is because it’s Google. Is it a good product? Sort of, it’s a half-baked product like everything else Google has been releasing lately.

The Key features:

  • Text recognition – In adding an event, or detecting a new event from Gmail, Calendar automatically detects event-specific words and suggests the adding of a new event with data auto-structured.
  • Manage Multiple Calendars – set up multiple calendars (work, personal, etc) and view them separately or together.
  • Heavy Gmail integration – Gmail recognizes when messages include event information, so when you get emailed about an event, you can add it to Google Calendar with just a couple clicks. Google Calendar links on the right side of the Gmail page.
  • Sharing – Calendars can be shared with others, and you can subscribe to others’ shared calendars. Read/write permissions can be granted on a per user basis. Calendars can be published via a web page or via RSS, so readers do not need to be on the Google Calendar platform.
  • Importing – You can import events from other calendar programs, including Yahoo Calendar and Microsoft Outlook. Click “Settings,” then “Import Calendar”.
  • Calendar Search
