Apple blunder gives Gates iPod royalty

Apple Computer may be forced to pay royalties to Microsoft for every iPod it sells after it emerged that Bill Gates’s software giant beat Steve Jobs’ firm in the race to file a crucial patent on technology used in the popular portable music players. The total bill could run into hundreds of millions of dollars.

This is just way too funny if this ends up being true. Yet another massive error on Apple’s part that will benefit Microsoft and set Apple back even further. Way to go guys. Two important points:

    1. 1. It was brought to my attention that there is a clause called “Prior Art” that basically states that someone can’t file a patent for a product that you have already produced and brought to market…even if you don’t have the technology patented. This really is a dumb clause considering you don’t actually have to patent anything you produce according to the idea…you just have to bring it to the market and then no one else can patent it anyways. How stupid.

      2. As a certain brilliant and beautiful female friend of mine *wink wink* smartly noted…even if this is true and Apple does in fact owe Microsft hundreds of millions in royalties, the chances that Microsoft will see that money any time soon is very slim. Apple will tie this up in court between retrials and the usual hoops that one has to jump through in the court system before Microsoft will ever see a dollar.

    Spread Firefox – 80,000,000 Downloads!

Today our Firefox web browser hit the 80,000,000 mark. What an accomplishment—and we here at Spread Firefox are directly responsible for making that happen.

Just nine months after the release of Firefox 1.0, we’ve got tens of millions of users who can go back to using the web rather than being abused by the web.

Wow…that’s damn impressive. Onwards and upwards guys… smile

    YouTube.com – Broadcast Yourself

    YouTube.com – Broadcast Yourself

A new folksonomy website that seems to be catching on is YouTube, a service similar to Flickr, except that it is for sharing and hosting short video clips instead of photos. Like Flickr, its core functionality is implemented in Flash. Videos can be tagged, searched, discussed, etc through a social network.

Sounds promising, though I still haven’t really gotten into the whole Flickr craze…still, in theory it’s a very cool technology.

Confirmed: Windows & Linux Run On The PSP

This is pretty cool. Windows 95 boots and runs on the x86 emulator on a PSP. So I hear, it takes about 10 minutes to boot but then it runs more or less at native speeds. The mouse emulation is a little bit spotty also so I read…still, pretty interesting. smile

    Untitled 8.13.05

I do not say I am a great man.

Simply I strive to do the most good in the painfully short and constrained period of life I am provided.

The truth lies in the mediocrity of human behavior.

Life is not a series of miracles and unusual events.

Simply by definition they have to be uncommon to be unusual.

That being said, 99% of ones life is the composite of normal, usual, ordinary, typical, and respectfully boring events.

Yet, we all hope to make a lasting beneficial impact on those we surround ourselves with and those we love.

It is the evolutionary struggle of human endurance.

    I promise I am still alive…

I am still around, I promise. Really.

Well it’s definitely been a while since an updated post. A lot has happened the past few weeks and I realized after the fact that I probably should have posted something about not being around. For that I do apologize.

So what have I been up to? Where did I go? Well here is the abbreviated version to spare you all the boring details. Boston (4), Cape Cod (3), Rhode Island (6), Rochester (10) , Rhode Island (1)…lol…The number in parenthesis is the rough number of days at each place. Some how (the math is off) all that added up to slightly more than 3 weeks with my wonderful girl. It was great, had an amazing time, saw some amazing things, and definitely didn’t want to leave her or go back to work.

What’s up right now? Well, there was some issues with an update to the blog software, but they issued another update that fixed all the problems I just mentioned.Soo …if you stumbled across the blog and saw it in it’s horribly ugly and completely messed up state then I apologize, things should be back to normal *knocks on wood*. Much to my wonderful surprise, a hard drive that I’ve been having constant problems with finally bit the metaphoric dust so I need to get my data off it and send it back to the company while the warranty still exists. It’s not a huge deal as I can still get at all my data, but it’s definitely a huge pain in the ass to have to reinstall Windows and reinstall all my applications. On that same topic, I am going to be getting a new hard drive to replace the faulty one. I was about to get a 100GB drive for $140 from a local store when just out of pure luck I checked on Newegg and found a 320GB drive for $125…clearly that makes sense right? 3x the space for $15 less…ah yes, it still amazes me thatNewegg can possibly be making a profit. So once this drive arrives it will bring my total storage capacity up to a laughable 894GB of storage…not including the 80GB of storage on my server. Yeah, that’s a little ridiculous, I’ll admit it….Anyways. Then the joyous process of reinstalling windows, all my applications, copying over files…blah blah blah. I can’t wait.

There doesn’t appear to be any other long trips away from the land of blogging in the near future, so I’m back and hopefully you’re still reading this. smile

    How would you change Gmail?

    How would you change Gmail?

This offers several ideas that would prove useful. Of special mention include multiple columns and a 5-star rating system instead of the current star/no-star system. My own suggestions would include several options for different gmail themes, and a MUCH NEEDED calendar that imports/exports to iCal/Outlook. This article is worth a read if you use Gmail.

Technologic Systems Designs NetBSD Controlled Toaster

Technologic Systems Designs NetBSD Controlled Toaster

It has long been regarded that the UNIX-like OS NetBSD is portable to every type of machine except perhaps your kitchen toaster. Technologic Systems, however, has conquered this last frontier. Using one of its rugged embedded TS-7200 single-board computers housed inside the empty space of a standard 2 slice toaster, Technologic Systems has designed a functional NetBSD controlled toaster.
