Move to WordPress is Complete

The move over to WordPress is complete (or almost complete). I’ve moved over the roughly 1,000 entries from Expression Engine which was easier than I expected actually. I won’t go into specifics, but it was pretty easy and it seems (*knocks on wood*) to have worked correctly. The new design is definitely still a work in progress, but it is coming along nicely. Most of the functionality that the old site had has been carried over as well.
To do:

  • Get the feed from Last.fm working. Done
  • Double and triple check how the categories transferred.
  • Possibly remove the Flickr tab (and the embedded Flickr gallery).
  • Continue tweaking the site design.
  • Figure out a more compact way of displaying the categories in the sidebar (tag cloud maybe?). Done
  • Figure out how to limit the number of “recent entries” in the sidebar (5 should be enough). Done
  • Double and triple check cross-browser compatibility (Firefox is done, Opera is done, need to check IE6/7, and Safari).
  • Evaluate the usefulness of Snap Shots (the link hover pop ups).
  • Verify that stats are being recorded (Mint and Google Analytic) Done

Let me finish by saying this, the template system for WordPress is the most confusing, convoluted, and unnecessarily complicated thing I have ever seen in any CMS that I have tried. I have experimented with my fair share of CMSs and WordPress easily takes the cake for being the least approachable. It is one of those ironies of life, I never realized how well done the template system for Expression Engine was until after I’ve switched from it. This being said, I apparently need to sit down and spend some quality time learning the WordPress template system because it isn’t nearly as easy as one might expect.
