Next Generation WPF Applications

Thirteen23 – Labs
Thirteen23 – Work

Our latest experiments focus on Microsoft’s Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), the next-generation graphics platform for Windows XP, Vista, and 2003.

Some very cool examples of what the next generation of Windows applications may look like. If you take a look at the “Work” page, of particular interest is Denounce (a podcast/RSS reader), Nostalgia (a Flickr viewer), and Cine.View (a NetFlix app). Very cool stuff.

NOTE: You must use Internet Explorer to launch these applications…they won’t work if you try to use Firefox (or any other browser I’d assume).

Web Based TV Guide

TV Guide Browser

I know it is not exactly the most exciting thing ever, but someone may find it useful anyways. This site makes use of AJAX and all kinds of Web 2.0 goodness to make an easy to use web based TV Guide. If you’re addicted to Lost like I am, then chances are you probably know what time it is on though.

British Library’s Turning Pages – Powered by WPF

British Library’s Turning Pages

The launch of a new OS always brings cool applications to demonstrate its capability. For Windows Vista one of the most impressive applications to be demo’ed at the UK launch event was the British Library’s Turning Pages application. An application exploiting Windows Presentation Foundation for impressive graphics and animations, and delivered ‘through the web’ to run directly on your PC.

This web application (it runs directly inside IE7) lets you browse through books that are hundreds of years old like you were sitting at a table in the library. This is an excellent example of what is possible with Windows Vista and more precisely, Windows Presentation Foundation. As long as you have .NET Framework 3.0 installed you can also run this web app on Windows XP.

Check out the British Library’s Turning Pages.

Judge reverses $1.5 Billion decision against Microsoft

Judge reverses $1.5 Billion decision against Microsoft

Recall just last week when Microsoft was ordered to shell out $1.5 Billion to Alcatel-Lucent for including mp3 technology in Windows? Well, after heading back to the courts, a Judge has completely dismissed all the claims against Microsoft. This means that, barring a successful appeal, Alctatel won’t be receiving a dime.

Thank god for common sense. The entire technology community (including a few Microsoft haters) were looking at this original ruling in favor of Alctatel in a state of dismay. Thank god this judge actually has some common sense. Alctatel was already counting its $1.5 billion and preparing for similar lawsuits against Apple and Creative…tough luck guys. Welcome back to reality.
