S.S.D.D. – MSN Desktop Search vs. Apple ‘Spotlight’

In case anyone didn’t know, S.S.D.D. stands for Same Shit Different Day…The age-old battle has found a new battlefield. Apple fanboys are saying that MSN Desktop Search is just a rip off of Apple’s soon to be released Spotlight (as part of OSX Tiger). This isn’t anything new, these two sides are constantly doing battle about basically useless things. The most recent that comes to mind was Apple’s infamous “Redmond start your copiers” signs at last years Apple conference where they showed off the first public preview of Tiger. Microsoft honestly have not taken part in this childish battle as far as I remember, it has mainly been Microsoft fanboys taking over the fight for them. Speaking of Microsoft fanboys, here is Paul’s Thurrot’s glowing review of the Desktop search.  Paul goes on to claim:

Other companies began copying the Microsoft desktop search strategy, knowing that the never-ending Longhorn delays would help them get to market sooner and appear to be nimbler and even more innovative, though it’s sort of astonishing how transparent that latter claim is. Chief among these competitors are Apple and Google.

On the other sideline are the Apple fanboys. I am honestly not quite sure which who side is more annoying. Apple fanboy Eric Longstaff (and Apple staff I might add) recently posted this totally unbiased review. Eric blasts Microsoft:

Why the sarcasm? It’s a ripoff of Spotlight that has already been announced for the upcoming Mac OS X Tiger. Spotlight, which serves the same purpose is available at the menu (same as taskbar for Windows) and within applications.

Great innovation. Way to go Microsoft!

Just something I stumbled across and thought I would throw out there for all those Apple fanboys that are crying “ripoff” right now. New Windows Could Solve Age-Old Puzzle The most interesting line in this article reads:

For those using Windows, this will mean easier, faster and more reliable searches for information. Replacing its antiquated file system with modern database technology…

…now lets just look at the date of this article. March 13, 2002 Way the hell before Apple ever even thought of pulling off something original like Spotlight.

Sorry Eric, but you are just wrong.
