How to never miss an episode with BitTorrent and RSS (pealco.net)

BitTorrent and Rss like TiVo

The are many solutions to this problem, but this is how I do it. Basically what’s happening is that the BT client checks an RSS feed for torrents that match certain criteria. When it detects those criteria, it begins to download the torrent. The result is something like TiVo, but free.

An interesting idea, I may just have to try this out.  rasberry

Mozilla Firefox 1.0 Officially Released

It’s been one long journey folks, but the wait is finally over. Mozilla has just posted the final builds of Firefox 1.0 to their FTP servers for everyone to grab. Firefox 1.0 comes with a whole host of new features; we asked Ben Goodger, Firefox developer, what he was most proud of.

“Overall, the group of people that got us here. But as far as features and code goes, I guess the Extension and Migration systems. They were both large and interesting challenges in their own rights, and I learned a huge deal in the process of creating them.”

Firefox 1.0 was compiled early on the morning of November 9th, and included a change in the CVS branding value of the browser. Ensure that you’ve downloaded the final build from one of the mirrors listed below, as many sites are falsely offering “nightly” Firefox builds as the real 1.0 release.

Download your copy now: Download from Mozilla.org

Have you just downloaded Firefox? Want some advice on installing, setting up, or just curious about the browser? Read Neowin’s updated Firefox guide. We’ve got great tips and tweaks, as well as a list of useful extensions to get you started, and help you to get the most out of Firefox. Also be sure to check out Google’s information site for Firefox, Firefox Central.

Konfabulator now available for Windows

Konfabulator

This wonderful little application has finally made it’s way over to the lightside, AKA Windows. There are several applications that already do this same thing such as Avedesk, Kapsules, Samurize, DesktopX, but Konfabulator seems to have a bit more of a “polished” feeling to it. There are a plethora of available widgets at the Widget Gallery.

One major downside. It’s horrendous on resource usage. We’re talking 10MB of RAM per widget open. Yes, 10MB each. While this isn’t a huge problem for most people because they have at least 512MB of RAM, others who has anything less than 512MB might experience some pretty significant slow downs. Hopefully the next update to this software will alleviate this annoyance.

DFI® Brings Dothan to Performance Desktop Computing

DFI® Brings Dothan to Performance Desktop Computing

Based on the Intel mobile 855GME/6300 ESB chipset and supports socket 479 Pentium M processors, this motherboard merges cutting edge mobile technology and performance potentials onto an environmentally friendly platform. Its low heat generation, virtually fan less operation and performance-oriented design makes the new 855GME-MGF the perfect solution for small home servers, silent home theater PCs, or blazing fast gaming systems.

This sounds really nice, except for the tiny fact that it’s based around the 855GME/6300 ESB chipset. This neither supports PCI-E (PCI-Express), DDR400, or AGP 8x. This is at least a huge step in the right direction.

Mark my words, my next desktop PC (and probably Laptop PC) will both be using a Dothan.  wink

Please, I beg you, Stop Whining

“The right of voting for representatives is the primary right by which all

other rights are protected. To take away this right is to reduce a man to

slavery.”—Thomas Paine

There is no better opportunity for us, as a college community, to

publicize our discontent with the recent elections than to support this

march.

This was an email sent to the entire Vassar College community. This is just getting ridiculous.

    1. Stop quoting my relative.

    2. Stop sending out stupid campus wide emails.

    3. Stop whining about the election, it’s over, start moving on now.

    4. Instead of having a useless march that the President will never see or hear of…do something useful like drinking yourself stupid.

    5. Have a little faith in your government, NO not the president, the Constitution…we’ve been through bad Presidents before, we’re all still here.

U.S. Army tests battlefield robot armed with pump action shotgun

U.S. Army tests battlefield robot armed with pump action shotgun

Anyone else find this a little terrifying? If we can’t accurately hit a target when we have a human pilot sitting in the cockpit how do we expect to remotely target something any better? The scary thing is the fact that,

Of course, the big story here is not that robots are being used in Iraq or tested by the U.S. Army – the big news is that they are being equipped with lethal weapons.

Anyone else worried about bugs/glitches in the software? Hmm… a little bit of a bigger deal when it has a shotgun in it’s hands guys.  grrr
