Try Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) without updating

Try Internet Explorer 7 without updating

Here’s how to try Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) without having to install it and update from IE6.

1. Extract all the files from IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe in one folder using WinRAR.

2. Delete: folder, update and files, ie4uinit.exe spuninst.exe spupdsvc.exe install.ins

3. Create a new empty text document and rename it to iexplore.exe.local

4. Done! Run iexplore.exe

I won’t tell you where to get IE7 Preview Beta 2 Build 5299 *cough*, but if you happen to find it, this is all you need to do to try it out. It’s still IE, and in that sense it’s definitely still lacking in rendering and CSS support, but it is a vast improvement over IE6. Try at your own risk. Beta 2 once it is officially released will be a public preview so you can just wait if you’d like to be all official and such. tongue rolleye

FYI: I Will be Gone For a While

I know I’ve been a little spacy (at best) on updates lately. I’ve been keeping myself busy with other things, for that I apologize. I will be headed off to Florida Monday morning for all of next week. We’re flying in Fort Lauderdale and then driving down to the Keys. Specifcally we’ll be doing a lot of scuba diving in Islamorada. There is also this rather interesting bridge named the 7 Mile Bridge...just look at the picture, and wow. Image that sucker during a hurricane. Yeesh. Upon my return from Florida I will briefly be home for 3 days. I’ll write more about my next trip during those 3 days.

JCXP – Microsoft To Ship All OS Bits With Every Version Of Vista

Microsoft To Ship All OS Bits With Every Version Of Vista

That’s right, Microsoft plans to market several versions of Vista but will distribute all of the OS bits with every product shipped so users can easily unlock and step up to more full-featured versions using electronic keys.

Having a master Windows Vista operating system means customers that buy PCs preloaded with one Vista SKU, Home Basic, for example, will be able to punch their credit card into a Microsoft Web site to unlock Vista Home Premium and more speedily deploy media center features without an on-site visit or requiring a wipe and reload of the system.

“No matter which edition you buy you get all the bits and a key to unlock it. Everyone will have all the bits,” said one source familiar with Microsoft’s plans. “Right now we maintain master images for each version of Windows XP and it’s a lot of work. Now there’s just one master image.”

Wow...clearly they fail to see the HUGE risk of massive amounts of piracy here. Everyone and there mom is going to buy the cheapest Home Basic edition and then just crack it (using some type of key generator that will obviously be created) to make it become the Ultimate Edition which will likely cost 2 or 3 times as much. Hmm...maybe this isn’t such a bright idea guys? big surprise

SuperSite for Windows: Office Live Preview

Office Live Preview

“Our goal is to address very pertinent pain points from which this group currently suffers,” Cetinok said. “If a small business doesn’t have an online presence now, they’re invisible. So the first goal is to get them online. That’s the basics.” To this end, Microsoft will provide small businesses with a professional online presence, at no cost. Instead, this service will be advertising supported. “We will provide small businesses with a domain name, Web site, and company email accounts with their own domain name, for free,” Cetinok said. “We believe that’s the first step.”

Let that sink in for a moment. Today, there are various solutions that offer a portion of these services--say, domain name acquisition and Web site hosting--but the fees are often extravagant. It’s confusing for small businesses to figure out where to get the best deals of domain names, Web site hosting, and email hosting, and they often have to turn to different service providers to bring it all together. That can take a lot of time and effort.

After having read this brief preview, and then ironically receiving an email the next day that all but implied that I got into the beta *knocks on wood*...I am pretty excited to try this out. Should be sometime in the next month or so I am hearing.

Lonely and Missing You

It hit me rather suddenly last night. I was just laying there, trying to fall asleep, and I had this overwhelming feeling of loneliness and longing to be holding you. I know it’s not much longer now, but it still seems impossibly far away. It still does not make any sense that something like this is so rare and yet we’re still so very far apart. On a little bit longer now my love.

FIC’s The Golden Gate Entertainment PC

FIC’s The Golden Gate Entertainment PC

FIC made a nice showing at CES unveiled tonight with more than just motherboards. They premiered some very cool new laptops, but the most interesting thing was the GE2, The Golden Gate Entertainment PC. This was by far one of the coolest new things I saw there today. The GE2 is extremely small is size with dimensions of 226x172x42 (mm) and weighs in at just 1.3kg. When I first saw it I thought it was another hard drive enclosure, it is that small. It features an Intel Yonah Dual-Core CPU, and Intel 945gm Chipset, supports ddr2 mem, embedded Intel 945gm graphics and Intel Pro Wireless. Price should be under $1000 depending on configuration with 2nd quarter avaibility.

Damn that is cool looking. It really does look just about the same size as an external hard drive...wow. Bye bye Mac mini. tongue rolleye

What comes packed in this tiny beast?

  • Intel Yonah Dual-Core CPU (now known as the Intel Core Duo Processor)
  • Intel 945gm Chipset
  • Support for DDR2 memory
  • Embedded Intel 945gm graphics
  • Intel Pro Wireless

All for under $1000 depending on the configuration.

The Problem with User Account Protection in Vista

There’s a rather interesting dilemma that will come out in Windows Vista. Vista is going to introduce this newer “user account protection” ( i think that’s the most recent name...they keep changing it) that will essentially require you to provide your administrative password to make any significant changes to the computer. Pretty much like on the OSX computers when it’d ask you for the admin password if you tried to install or delete a program for example. It all comes from unix/linux contrary to OSX people trying to say Microsoft is copying OSX again....anyways, back on topic. The short version is, the problem is already coming out in a big way that tons of beta testers are annoyed with this new protection. One of the first thing I do whenever i install vista now is immediately go in and turn off the user account protection. It’s like someone saying “are you really sure you want to do that?” ...it’s irritating. However, purely from a security point of view it makes a lot of sense to use it, and again from a security perspective it’s horrible that people are shutting it off because these are the same people who will later be bitching about windows being insecure and about having problems with IE7. As it turns out (to put it briefly) IE7 is set to run in this protected area of the computer from now on...it will be running under an user account with almost not privileges so that spyware/adware/viruses will no longer be able to access/alter/change systems files in any way. This is a very good thing...But, when people turn off this account protection it also brings IE7 back into the good old normal user area where it can cause all kinds of problems like normal. ...Just some thoughts.
